“Together with President Xi Jinping, we call for respect for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine,” French President Emmanuel Macron tweeted early Tuesday after meeting with Xi. “The consequences of this conflict go beyond European borders: through close coordination between France and China we will overcome them.” The statement stopped short of calling for an end to the conflict, however, saying France and China were determined to “put an end to the escalation and deal with the consequences of the war in Ukraine.” China has refrained from directly criticizing Russia, but President Vladimir Putin has previously admitted that Xi has “questions and concerns” about the invasion.
