As the big day approached, Brigette and Marco Fiore say they watched as tips and warnings of heat began to appear in southern Manitoba.
“We just wanted to make sure no one had heatstroke or anything like that,” Brigitte told CTV News. “I was already nervous, just like getting married. But I mean, I feel worried about everyone else with the temperature.”
The couple discussed postponing the wedding, but had already waited three years to get married due to the COVID-19 pandemic and decided to endure the heat.
“We were worried and almost did not want to believe it,” Marco said. “We just thought, ‘There’s no way it’s so hot.’
But it was.
Temperatures in Winnipeg skyrocketed to 37 C, the highest temperature recorded for June 19 since 1888, according to the Environment and Climate Change Canada.
Heat warnings valid throughout the weekend warned that humidex prices would reach as low as 40’s Sunday afternoon.
“It was really sweaty and hot, but everyone had a blast,” Marco said, adding that he and his wedding party were adorned with three-piece suits. “We rented a few more fans and a portable AC unit, but honestly they did not make a dent. It was still hot.”
The heat did not stop Marco and Brigette Fiore from celebrating their big day on June 19, 2022 (Submitted by: Brigette Fiore)
However, this heat did not stop Marco and Brigette from celebrating their big day on June 19 – an outdoor wedding ceremony and reception at Pine Ridge Hollow with 120 guests who, as they say, showed up and closed by the end of the night with no issue.
“I think the only thing that went wrong was that my hair was left straight, but I mean it was quite wet and hot,” Brigette said with a laugh.
The couple says that even with the record-breaking heat, they could not ask for anything else.
“We got married and everyone came home safe – these are the top two things,” said Marco. “And it is a memory we will never forget.”
