The United States is experiencing the highest flu hospitalizations seen during this time period in 10 years, the network said in a news release. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that adults 65 and older get a high-dose or booster flu shot this season. While anyone can get sick from the flu, older adults are at greater risk of developing serious complications from the virus. This is because older people generally do not have as strong an immune system as younger, healthier people. By boosting the immune response, high-dose and boosted flu vaccines offer better protection against flu viruses and are specially designed for people in this age group. Higher-dose flu shots and adjuvants are the preferred types of flu shots for people 65 and older in 2022-2023. All available flu vaccines are quadrivalent, meaning they protect against four different strains of flu. Choosing the right flu vaccine depends on your age, health history, allergies, and many other factors that should be discussed with a healthcare provider.
