Some things can be revised, some things can’t, and picking and choosing means we make horrible mistakes like Monday night. The Philadelphia Eagles had every right to be mad in the fourth quarter of their 32-21 loss to the Washington Commanders. Washington linebacker Jamin Davis grabbed Eagles tight end Dallas Geddert’s mask and dragged him under it. It wasn’t just a penalty, it was flagrant. However, the officials never saw it. As Goedert was pulled under his mask, which everyone could see immediately on replay, he popped the ball. Washington bounced back. This was not a judgment call. This is a very bad loss by the officials. Explain why it should not be reviewable? That happened with just over nine minutes remaining and Washington leading 23-21. The Eagles had just picked up Commanders quarterback Taylor Heinicke and had some momentum. Davis then put on Godert’s mask and got away with it. Instead of a 15m penalty and the Eagles holding the ball, the Governors got it back. Washington didn’t drive it at all, but did get a 55-yard field goal that it never should have had. Because face mask penalties cannot be reviewed, nothing could be done. The NFL resisted expanding the replay, but it might make sense to at least include personal fouls. It would have made a big difference at a pivotal moment on Monday night. In a just world, the play could have been reviewed and the right call made.
