Victoria Police are investigating one of their own after an officer opened the door of his parked cruiser to a passing cyclist. The bicyclist was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after the incident in the 900-block of Esquimalt Road, where the officer was responding to a call Friday morning. VicPD said the officer provided immediate medical attention and called in paramedics and additional officers, including a supervisor. Traffic officers have launched an investigation, overseen by VicPD’s Professional Standards Unit. VicPD said the incident met the standards of a reportable injury to the Office of the Police Complaints Commissioner, which was automatically notified. The collision remains under investigation. The provincial government has increased the fine for “dooring” cyclists from $81 to $368 in 2020, saying drivers must check for passing cyclists before opening their doors. Anyone who witnessed the collision or has video of the incident and has not yet spoken to officers can call VicPD at 250-995-7654 extension 1.
