The university’s emergency management issued a warning on Twitter at 10.42pm about an “active assault weapon”. “There has been a shooting on Culbreth Street and the suspect is on the loose and considered armed and dangerous,” Ryan said in a tweet, asking the university community to “please evacuate.” Ryan later sent the letter with the message to the university community, saying he was “devastated to report that the shooting resulted in three deaths,” with two others hospitalized and treated for unspecified injuries. The UVA Police Department also posted a statement online saying multiple police agencies were searching for a suspect who was considered “armed and dangerous.” Ryan said in his letter Monday morning that only designated essential personnel should come to work. A UVA student who was in her dorm near Culbreth Street said she heard six gunshots, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported.
