University of Virginia police are looking for a man named Christopher Darnell Jones in connection with a shooting incident at the Culbreth Garage off Culbreth Street on the Central Grounds at the University of Virginia late Sunday night, November 13. Jones was once on the University of Virginia football roster. UV police are warning people not to approach Jones but to call 911 instead. Students remain sheltered in place, fearful and anxious as they await news of their safety. “I have work to do but I literally can’t focus like what’s going on right now,” tweeted Zyahna Bryant, the UVa student best known for her efforts to rid Charlottesville of its Confederate statues when she was at Charlottesville High School.

The UV police have issued run, hide and fight advice. They consider the suspect armed and dangerous, they said. The garage is located behind the area where the UVa marching band practices. Student body president Cecelia Cain said she is inside listening to a police scanner. She said she and others are “pretty freaked out.” Throughout, the students are sheltered in place, both unable to come out and afraid to do so. “We’re locked out right now. I haven’t been able to go anywhere,” said Eva Surovell, editor of the Cavalier Daily. Police said the suspect is a black man wearing a burgundy jacket, blue jeans and red shoes. Several shots were reportedly heard around 10:40 p.m., as students were enjoying a quiet weekend, with the UVa Cavaliers playing on the road in Pittsburgh. Temperatures dropped into the upper 30s Sunday night, down from Saturday’s high of 71 degrees. There are currently no reports of injuries, but several emergency vehicles are still in the area. Charlottesville has experienced several shootings in the past two months, but so far none have occurred at the UVa Grounds. In September, a Charlottesville man was shot and killed as he left a downtown club in the early morning hours of September 17th. In addition, three teenagers were shot at the Mallside Forest Apartments on September 22. Two men were shot on Anderson Street on September 28. and two teenagers were shot near the Downtown Mall on Oct. 15 at about 5:15 p.m. A man was shot and killed on Sunday, October 23 as he tried to save his life outside a busy bar on the Downtown Mall around 1 a.m. on Sunday, October 23.
