Matt Fitzpatrick is a great champion for the first time. The 27-year-old won the US Open 2022 at The Country Club in Brooklyn, Massachusetts, on Sunday. Fitzpatrick finished in six under, a better shot than Will Zalatoris and Scottie Scheffler. He gave a paper two under 68 in the last round. They both fired their shots, but their luck was different from their second shots. Fitzpatrick landed in the green and left himself with a 19-foot bird. Zalatoris found the sand. A bird and a boob later, Fitzpatrick were two clean shots in first place. This at least gave him some room for error as he made the one mistake he could not afford at No. 18. He picked up his T-shirt at a shelter. Knowing that the parity was still enough to possibly avoid the playoffs, Fitzpatrick unleashed a masterful approach that put him just 18 feet from the cup. He made his way twice to stay at six down. This left the door cracked slightly open for Zalatoris, who was standing 14 feet away from a birdie opportunity. His shot missed the left by inches, securing the title to Fitzpatrick. Country Club does not forgive all tournaments, and the top six golfers split by two shots into the final round. The stage was set for a dramatic finish on Sunday.
With the top players halfway there, the US Open had turned into a three-horse race between Fitzpatrick, Scheffler and Zalatoris. Fitzpatrick was sitting at the bottom six, with Scheffler and Zalatoris tied at the bottom five. Colin Moricawa, Hindeki Matsuyama and Danny McCarthy were all six shots behind Fitzpatrick and quickly ran out of time to improve their score.
A bad approach to No. 17 was costly for Matsuyama. His shot did not reach the green and went straight, as he finally compromised with the exchange rate. Things would have become a little more interesting if he had reached the 18th shirt on the bottom four.
As his back nine started, Scheffler ran in the wrong direction after a strong start to the lap. Through six holes, he won four strokes to move to the bottom six in total. But the boobies with backs at Nos. 10 and 11 threw him down on all fours.
History was repeating itself one day after the 2022 Masters champion went four in the back nine.

Two consecutive days that the back 9 chews Scottie Scheffler, especially the tiny little 11th hole

It drops to -4. pic.twitter.com/ldVd7bzD6X Scheffler quickly had company with Fitzpatrick, who also booked the 10th and 11th holes. Jeff Eisenband @JeffEisenband These mistakes of Matt Fitzpatrick in the 4th round are a spectacular tribute to the many quarters of Northwestern Football that we have both watched. Zalatoris had the opportunity to tighten his grip on a two-shot lead, but instead conceded more ground. His driving at No. 12 started on the left, but was cut off on the right, in heavy things next to the road. This put him behind the eight ball, but nevertheless almost saved the par, as his ball was in line with the cup before turning left at the last minute. Fitzpatrick took advantage of Zalatoris’s wrong shot. He took the money with a 48-foot bird to get a share of first place with five down. PGA TOUR @PGATOUR The clutch from 48 feet away 😤pic.twitter.com/Xh79Ffvrj8 Kyle Porter @KylePorterCBS Win or lose today, the last two big ones have influenced me at Fitzpatrick. He could not be more impressed with his transformation. Scheffler, meanwhile, was only one back, but could not create any positive momentum. When something finally broke, it was essentially a wash because his bird at No. 17 was only a few moments after Fitzpatrick took the bird at No. 15. Rory McIlroy struggled consistently in the final round, collecting three birds and three bogs in the front nine. Nevertheless, he succeeded the two birds at No. 14 and 15, helping him to finish in a draw for fifth place. The TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut, is the next stop on the PGA Tour, with the Travelers’ Championship starting on Thursday. Soon, the next big tournament will be just around the corner. The Open Championship starts on July 14 at the legendary St. Andrews Links in Scotland.
