Global Dream II, designed to seat more than 9,000 passengers, was almost completed at a shipyard off the Baltic coast of Germany. However, shipbuilder MV Werften filed for bankruptcy in January 2022 and managers could not find a buyer for Global Dream II. The German cruise industry magazine An Bord reported that the ship’s lower hull would be rejected at scrap price. Manager Christoph Morgen reportedly told a news conference on Friday that the ship had to be transported from MV Werften’s Wismar shipyard by the end of the year because the yard had been sold to the Thyssenkrupp naval unit, which plans to build a ship there. Demand for cruise ships has collapsed since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. At 208,000 tonnes, it would be the sixth largest cruise ship in size, just behind the five Royal Caribbean Oasis.
