The volunteer lifeguards, led by Inshore Lifeboat Helm, Harry Griffin and crew Ed Thomas and Ed Steele, were launched shortly after 10pm and rushed to the scene, quickly locating the four-meter side and the two occupants. The crew assessed the situation and found that the motor of the nerve could not be started. They then towed the boat and the couple on board to a safe place at Exmouth Marina. Other Exmouth RNLI volunteers who assisted were Deputy Launcher Rick Newcombe, Head Launcher Neil Cannon, tractor driver Karl Halford, and Rory Carrig, Jason Luff, and Jake Richards. Once assured that the boat and its occupants were safe, the volunteer crew and the coastal lifeboat returned to the Exmouth RNLI lifeboat station at 10:40 p.m. and continued the service a little later. Inshore Lifeboat Helm, Harry Griffin, said: “The occupants on the side were well equipped for emergencies and it was very sad that when they arrived to leave Dawlish Warren an error occurred in their outboard engine, leaving them stranded.
