These results help answer one of the central questions of the midterm campaign: whether the fervor to overturn Roe v. Wade over the summer could last into November. It’s been three days since the election and a tally has yet to be announced as the counting of ballots continues. Control of the Senate is a toss-up and the House of Representatives is leaning toward Republicans, according to CBS News estimates. Senate races in Georgia and Nevada are still undecided. The Georgia Senate race between incumbent Sen. Raphael Warnock and his GOP challenger, Herschel Walker, will go to a runoff on Dec. 6. Republicans need to pick up one of two seats in Georgia and Nevada to win control of the Senate, according to CBS News projections. On Friday night, CBS News predicted that Sen. Mark Kelly, a Democrat, won re-election in Arizona.
Alaska’s Senate race also remains a toss-up, but the top two candidates are both Republicans, meaning the outcome won’t affect the Senate’s party makeup. Since none of the candidates received 50% of the vote, the race will go into a runoff, with results expected in two weeks.
Arizona Republican gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake, who is currently trailing Democrat Katie Hobbs, accused state election officials of “slowing down” the vote count. Bill Gates, the chairman of the Board of Supervisors in Maricopa County, the state’s largest, disputed that charge Thursday, saying the count was always going to take “several days.” Gates added, “Frankly, it’s insulting to Lake Cary to say these people behind me are doing it late when they’re working 14 to 18 hour days.” Colorado Republican Rep. Lauren Bobert is in an upset race to hold on to Democratic challenger Adam Frisch in what was considered a safe GOP seat, but her lead is growing. On Thursday morning, with 99% of the vote, he was ahead by more than 1,100 votes.
