Elon Musk backed down on a work-from-home ban hours before a deadline for Twitter employees to commit to his “extremely hard-line” vision for the company. In an email, Musk gave all Twitter staff until 5 p.m. ET on Thursday to either click on a link confirming their willingness to work “long hours at high intensity,” or leave the company with three months’ severance pay. Despite his “hardline” ultimatum, Musk scaled back his total ban on remote work in a follow-up email Thursday after more workers than he expected chose to leave, according to Bloomberg. “All that’s required to be approved is for your manager to take responsibility for making sure you’re making an outstanding contribution,” she then said of working from home.
Musk had previously said that remote work would no longer be allowed and that workers would be expected to be in the office for at least 40 hours a week. He had told employees that “if you don’t show up to the office, the resignation is accepted,” according to a minute of a meeting reported by the Verge.
