The drugs were seized during the execution of a search warrant at two suspected hideouts on October 5.
Police say the “amazing” haul, which consists of 520 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine and 151 kilograms of cocaine, would likely be worth around $58 million.
“I cannot understate the significance of a seizure of this magnitude or the social cost these drugs would have on our communities,” said Supt. Mandeep Man told reporters during a press conference. “The drugs seized in the undercover houses were destined for our neighborhoods. Stopping the flow of these drugs has prevented potential overdoses, which we all know is an epidemic facing our communities as we speak.”
The man said police have identified three people in connection with the drug trade and “expect arrests soon”.
He said the seizure, which followed a four-week investigation, represents the largest single-day bust in Toronto police history. It easily eclipses the previous record of 286kg of cocaine and crystal methamphetamine held in April.
These drugs had an estimated street value of approximately $28 million.
“This particular seizure diverts millions of dollars in drug profits from organized criminals and undoubtedly has a positive impact on the safety and well-being of our communities,” Man said of the latest setback. “I want to thank again the dedicated members of our Toronto Narcotics Task Force and the Asian Organized Crime Task Force. What you see here today is a result of their tireless work and commitment to community safety.”
The man said police believe the drugs were brought in through the US border and intended for distribution locally.
He said police have contacted legal counsel for the three suspects and intend to press charges related to trafficking.
