Jeremiah James Miller, 49, pleaded guilty in Kamloops provincial court earlier this month to one count of failing to comply with a provision of the Sex Offender Registry Act (SOIRA). Miller was convicted in 2017 of a number of offences, including a number of robberies and sexual assault. He was sentenced to four and a half years in federal prison. Miller robbed two convenience stores and a liquor store, including one in which he pointed a knife at a pregnant store clerk’s stomach and threatened to stab her unborn child. The sexual assault involved the daughter of a woman Miller was dating. He was released to live in a halfway house in Kelowna on August 15, 2019 and escaped shortly thereafter. He was supposed to have declared and registered with the SOIRA order on September 14, 2019, but never appeared. “He basically disappeared for a number of years,” Crown prosecutor Evan Goulet told the court. “He was unlawfully free from his probation and did not report and register for the SOIRA order. He was recently arrested on a warrant for his release and was detained for several days.” The court heard that Miller fled to the Blind Bay area, where he lived a “social life”, said defense lawyer John Gustafson, working as a handyman and building furniture. Gustafson said Miller was clean and sober and involved in a long-term relationship. District Court Judge Clark Burnett made a joint application for time served. Miller spent 76 days in jail after his arrest, giving him credit for 114 days on the standard time-and-a-half count.
