It’s been a long time since we’ve had a lot of big financial blockbusters fighting for space over the weekend, but that’s what we understand now that Lightyear has been released. The Semi-spinoff Toy Story that puts Chris Evans in the Space Ranger costume has had some tough competition in the form of Jurassic World Dominion and Top Gun: Maverick, and is making its box office debut. While receiving rave reviews from critics and audiences alike, Pixar’s film has fallen short of its initial $ 135 million worldwide expectations. According to Deadline, the film grossed $ 86 million worldwide, with Variety reporting that it has grossed only $ 51 million in North America. It is worth noting that Lightyear is the first Pixar movie to hit theaters in two years after 2020’s Onward. Turning Red landed on Disney + when it debuted in March, and both Luca and Soul went live streaming during their respective releases. At this point, people may think you are streaming to watch Pixar movies and it may also be the weird location of the movie as an extension of the Toy Story brand. Either way, it will be interesting to see how he continues to live, both in theaters and in Pixar’s largest pantheon. In terms of competition, Dominion took first place for the second consecutive weekend. Even with a 60% drop in the United States, the Universal dinosaur trilogy broke the $ 500 million barrier on Friday and has now raised a total of $ 622.2 million worldwide. Deadline reports that Dominion has now won Free Guy and become the third largest Hollywood movie in the pandemic. And Maverick has now grossed $ 885.2 million, continuing its record as the highest grossing film in the career of Tom Cruise. It would not be surprising if he ended up making over a billion when everything is said and done. And while Lightyear has some skeptics ahead of it, its biggest competitor will be Minions: Rise of Gru, which hits theaters on July 1st. Illumination’s yellow-clad demons made over a billion when their first spinoff movie came out in 2015, and that could be bigger, especially if there’s a trailer attached to the studio’s upcoming Mario movie.
