As of 6:24 a.m., Environment Canada has issued a snow watch for the Niagara region, saying 60 centimeters of snow is expected to blanket the area.
Snow will begin to fall tonight and continue into Sunday morning.
“Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve,” the weather warning said. “If you must travel, let others know your schedule and destination, and carry an emergency kit and cell phone.”
Environment Canada says near-zero road visibility is possible due to heavy blowing snow, making road closures possible.
Just south of the border from Niagara Falls to Buffalo, New York, a “lake effect snow warning” is in effect. The National Weather Service says anywhere between 2 and 4 feet of snow is expected to fall between 7 PM Thursday night and Sunday afternoon.
“The heaviest snow is expected late this afternoon through Friday night, when snowfall rates could exceed 3 inches per hour,” the warning states.
Niagara isn’t the only area seeing snow this weekend, as the Federal Weather Service has issued snow watches for areas including Barrie, Collingwood, Midland, Burk’s Falls, Bruce Peninsula, Owen Sound, Kingston, Picton, Huntsville and Simcoe. .
No weather warnings have been issued for Toronto at this time, but lighter snow may fall in the city.
Toronto has a 30 to 40 per cent chance of flurries from Thursday to Sunday with temperatures dropping to -6C on Sunday night.
