Toby Salin was last seen in Pemberton on Thursday morning and his disappearance led to investigations by several agencies and an explosion of support from the search and rescue community. “We are deeply saddened by the death of Whistler SAR member Toby Salin,” BCSARA said in a Facebook post on Sunday. “Toby will be remembered for his strong commitment to SAR, his incredible work ethic and his dry humor. Many will miss him.” In her own Facebook post, Whistler SAR expressed her “heartfelt condolences” to Salin’s family, friends and colleagues. “Our hearts are heavy with this sad news,” said the research team. “We will miss you Toby and we will never forget you and your full support as a volunteer and a member. Rest in Peace.” On Saturday, BCSARA chief executive Dwight Yocim told CTV News that news members were used to being called in to try to find missing persons, but the search for Salin was an emotional affair for the close-knit volunteer community. “Almost every team in the province that knows what is happening has approached,” he said. “It’s a family.” The 3,000 members of the BC search and rescue team, Yochim explained, will often be called to other parts of the province when help is needed – as was the case when catastrophic floods hit parts of BC last year. “It may be two o’clock in the morning and you work with people you may never have met, but you trust them with your life. “As you can imagine, when one of us is lost, you want to withdraw all stops,” he said. Salin’s truck was found near In-SHUCK-ch Forest Service Road, southeast of Pemberton, local Mounties said in a statement on Friday, adding that “Pemberton Search and Rescue, RCMP Air Services, Lower Mainland Emergency Response Team, Pemberton RCMP , Stl “atl’imx Tribal Police, locals and RCMP Integrated Police Dog Services” participated in an unsuccessful search for the 51-year-old.
