Wes DeLong and his family were driving on Peardonville Street in Abbotsford shortly after 12:30 a.m. Sunday when their car crashed. “We did not know what it was,” he said. “It was not a rock. Within seconds I thought, maybe someone shot us.” The father of three pulled the vehicle and found an inch-wide hole in his car door above the driver’s window. He wondered if he was shot in the car in case of a possible false identity. Abbotsford police initially told DeLong they thought it was a hole made from a 0.22 caliber bullet. Police later found a 60-centimeter-long arrow in the road. DeLong said his first reaction was anxiety and anger. “Why would anyone do that?” he said. Abbotsford police say they have gone door-to-door on a two-block radius to investigate and are looking for security camera footage. Archery instructor Patricia Gonzalves said the shape of the hole in the vehicle suggests that the arrowhead was a part of the body that was commonly used in the Middle Ages for hunting. He says body parts are usually in historical recreation and can be dangerous. The incident, though scary, could have been worse, he said. The hole in the car was only about 15 to 20 cm above where the driver’s head would be.
“With the amount of force it takes to really pierce the metal of the vehicle, it would have passed through the glass without a problem,” Gonzalves said.
DeLong hopes that the person in charge will appear. Paying damages, he says, would be a bonus. “Whether it was an accident or intentional, I would love to meet you, ‘secretly,’” he said. “I strongly believe in forgiveness, but also in restorative justice and correction. So if you want to do the right thing, come forward and we can all move forward.”
