London Underground workers have gone on a 24-hour strike, with all subway lines suspended in whole or in part. People are advised to avoid traveling where possible until midnight on Wednesday. The only transportation options that remain unaffected are buses, DLR services and trams, although everything is expected to be busier than usual. The Elizabeth line runs with serious delays, while the London Overground runs a reduced route until 6.30pm, with about half the scheduled trains running. This is Tube’s fourth strike for 2022 so far. The RMT union said the controversy, which has led to both the current metro strike and railway strikes across the country this week, was about job cuts, wage freezes and working conditions. “RMT supports the campaign for a square agreement for all employees in view of the cost of living crisis and our current campaign is part of this overall campaign which means that public services must be properly funded and all employees properly paid on good terms.” , she said in a statement.

In a statement on the strikes, TfL said: “TfL services and national railways will be affected by the strikes from Tuesday 21 June to Sunday 26 June.” This takes into account not only the London Underground exit (from midnight on 21 June to midnight on 22 June), but also the wider upheaval caused by rail strikes across the UK, as 40,000 workers railway workers take part in the labor action on 21, 23 and 25 June. This means that most trips during the TfL network on Tuesday 21 June will be out of bounds, but they also cover TfL refunds for the other six days of the week when RMT staff members may go on strike. Why are Tube workers on strike?
Today’s subway strike is linked to more workers across the UK’s rail network, with the controversy focusing on working conditions, wage freezes and the erosion of benefits. In a statement, the RMT union claimed that “as a result of transport austerity” provoked by the Conservative government “which cut 4 4 billion in funding from the National Rail and Transport for London”, the train companies took action:
Attack the Railroad Pension Program and the TfL system, reducing benefits, making staff work harder and making them poorer in retirement, while paying increased contributions. Cutting thousands of jobs on the rail network, without providing a guarantee for non-compulsory redundancies. Reduce infrastructure safety inspections by 50 percent to facilitate mass layoffs. Attack on working conditions, conditions and practices in the form of internal fire and re-employment, including reduction of existing wages and increase of working week. Resumption of disputes over the role and responsibility of the security guard and massive cuts in catering services. Closing every ticket office in the UK regardless of the accessibility needs of different passengers Reduction of real wages for most of our members through long-term wage freezes and well below RPI inflation wage proposals.
The union said: “Faced with such an aggressive agenda of cuts in jobs, conditions, wages and pensions, RMT has no choice but to defend our members industrially to stop this race to the bottom.” Helen Coffey21 June 2022 11:34 1655805848
