Gordon Gault was attacked during a “brawl” involving several people in Elswick last Wednesday night, Northumbria Police said. The force said Gordon “suffered injuries consistent with being caused by a bladed object”. The 14-year-old was in hospital but died on Tuesday night. Last week police made 14 arrests, but no charges have yet been laid. Chief Superintendent Elena Barron, area commander for Newcastle and Gateshead, said “this is an absolutely devastating result and our thoughts are with Gordon’s family at this terrible time”. “We are determined to find out the full circumstances that led to Gordon’s death,” he said. “As a force, we are committed to using every tactic at our disposal to identify the perpetrators and ensure that effective justice is served.” He added: “We have made a total of 14 arrests so far as part of our extensive inquiries and officers remain in the area as part of the investigation and to provide reassurance to those living nearby. “At this early stage, we believe all parties involved knew each other and there is no information to suggest there is a risk to the wider public. “I would encourage anyone with concerns to speak to an officer in the area.”
