Republican Sam Pirozzolo won the race for Assembly District 63, which includes the Mid-Island and part of Staten Island’s North Shore. Pirogolo, who also ran on the Conservative Party line, received 53.5 percent of the 36,000 votes cast, beating Democratic candidate Vincent Argenziano for the open seat, according to data from the New York State Board of Elections. The seat has been held by Democrats since 1982. Michael Cusick, who has represented the district since 2003, announced in February that he would not seek re-election. Pirozzolo told The Post he plans to address issues including crime and changing bail laws, as well as inflation. The newly cut pol previously made political news surrounding the saga surrounding the massive lawn art championing then-candidate Donald Trump. In the summer of 2016, Pirozzolo installed a 12-foot foam and wood “T” sculpture created by artist Scott LoBaido in front of his home. But that August, the statue mysteriously burned down in what Pirozzolo believed to be arson. “It’s a shame this generation that exists now, these kids, feel it’s okay to block my First Amendment speech,” Pirogolo said after the effigy was burned. For them, that makes sense,” Pirogolo said at the time. In response, LoBaido built an even larger, 16-foot-tall T sculpture on Pirozzolo’s property, which was unveiled at a ceremony attended by 150 people singing “God Bless America.” The city’s Department of Buildings fined the homeowner $2,400 for erecting an “illegal illuminated sign in a residential area,” he wrote on a GoFundMe page, which he started in part to cover the cost of the violation. He added, however, that the money could be used to pay for an even larger piece of art that “may or may not look like a giant middle finger.” Last year, Pirozzolo hosted a LoBaido play that read “Let’s Go Brandon,” an insult to President Joe Biden.James Messerschmidt Pirozzolo laments that he has hosted nine of LoBaido’s works over the years at his home in the borough’s Castleton Corners neighborhood, including a memorial to slain NYPD officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu.
