Emergency services were called to a section of the plain west of Tidworth around 10.45am on Tuesday morning after reports that a man was involved in a collision, Wiltshire police said. The 26-year-old man had suffered severe head injuries after being hit by a Warrior infantry fighting vehicle and died on the spot, the force said. The victim was a member of the 5th Rifle Battalion and was an infantryman when he was hit. An army spokesman said: “It is with great sadness that we can confirm the death of a soldier in Wiltshire on June 21. “Our thoughts are with the soldier’s family and friends at this difficult time and we ask that their privacy be respected.” Wiltshire Police said they were leading the investigation along with the Army and the Health and Safety Officer. Last October, Pte Jethro Watson-Pickering, 23, was killed during a training exercise at Salisbury Plain when his Warrior armored vehicle overturned. He participated in the Iron Storm Exercise, one of the largest held for years at the military training base. Of these deaths, 101 were in the army. Of all deaths among UK Armed Forces personnel, 5% occurred during training or exercise.
