Children’s hospitals across Ontario have reported a surge of critically ill pediatric patients, which has led to unprecedented demand in emergency rooms – forcing health care facilities to reallocate resources to manage the volume of patients.

The President of Sick Kids, Dr. Ronald Kohn said the hospital had “no choice” but to prioritize “urgent, urgent and time-sensitive surgeries” from November 14 in order to maintain intensive care beds for an influx of patients. “This decision was not taken lightly. The reduction in surgical activity will allow us to support areas of the hospital that need help managing increasing patient volume and acuity, including intensive care units, pediatrics and the Emergency Department,” Dr. Cohn said in a statement. “It fills every ward in the hospital,” said Dr. Lennox Huang. “Our ICU is almost at capacity, we see that in our emergency department and our general pediatric floor as well.”

The hospital created a command center to monitor patients within the hospital and those treated in the wider community in order to balance the number of patients who need to be admitted to the emergency department. In recent days, the hospital’s intensive care unit was 127 percent overcrowded, with more than half the patients in the ICU requiring ventilators.
