“We haven’t heard of supply issues with the flu vaccine this year, although I’ve heard some people say that for the over-65 vaccine, they had to shop around a bit to find the right one,” said Dr. Wes Stubblefield with the Alabama Department of Public Health. That’s because the CDC advises adults over 65 to get higher-dose flu shots this season, which not all providers carry. “Not every place has that,” Stubblefield said. It comes amid growing flu concerns in the state. “In Alabama, we’re seeing widespread cases of flu-like illness, with high rates in some of our counties, and we’re also seeing confirmed flu,” said Dr. Rachel Lee with UAB. While it may be more difficult for seniors to get the recommended vaccines, it is not impossible. Individuals should look for pharmacies or clinics that offer:

Fluzone high-dose tetravalent inactivated influenza vaccine Flublok quadrivalent influenza vaccine Fluad Quadrivalent Vaccine (Adjuvanted Influenza Vaccine)

The CDC lists them as “potentially more effective” than the standard vaccine. “If they’re over 65 and they’re getting the flu shot, they should say, they should ask, ‘Is this what’s recommended for people over 65?’” Stubblefield said. “If they can’t find any, you can get any flu shot that’s available for adults, but hopefully they can find one of these three to give them the best protection.” Talk to your provider to find the best solution for you. You can find flu vaccine availability by visiting vaccines.gov and entering your zip code. Not reading this story in the WSFA News app?
