The incident happened around 10 pm on Saturday, June 18, when a moored boat caught fire in the yard. The flame grew in size and was visible from a great distance. Three appliances were present and two pipes and jets were used.” The Beverly Shipbuilding industry was historically significant, employing more than 650 people, building more than 1,300 ships, and contributing to Britain’s efforts in World War II.
