RCMP said a 911 call was received at 8:50 a.m. and the collision occurred near Range Road 113.
“Officers located the two semi trucks involved fully engulfed in flames and emergency crews worked very hard for a period of time to extinguish the fire,” said Cpl Troy Savinkoff.
“The fire was quite large. It involved a semi-truck carrying some type of poles or pipes and the other was a tanker. So it was a significant collision.”
The driver of a truck died at the scene. The driver of the other truck was taken to hospital by STARS Air Ambulance and is in serious, life-threatening condition.
Savinkov said he did not yet have the ages or cities of the drivers. He did not have an estimated time for when the highway would reopen.
Witnesses shared photos and videos from the scene showing large flames and thick black smoke.
Evansburg is located approximately 100 kilometers west of Edmonton.
