On Sunday afternoon, police issued a public safety alert and said they were looking for two men carrying pistols. More details about the incident were released on Monday, including the 17 people arrested during the investigation, with 15 of them later released without charge. The RCMP says the incident started on Sunday morning, when two police officers tried to follow a vehicle to a house in La Ronge, after its driver did not try to get carried away. The driver of the car is said to have escaped on foot and was chased by a police officer. The RCMP reports that another person then got out of the suspicious vehicle and fired in the direction of the other police officers, hitting the windshield and the refrigerator of the patrol vehicle. One of the officers returned fire, RCMP said. The RCMP says that this bullet hole in the windshield of their truck was caused by the suspect who shot the police officers. (RCMP) Police say there was a “gathering” at the house where the suspects stopped and that several people left the building and were arrested. The RCMP says they are still looking for three people, including the man believed to have shot at the RCMP. The suspect is described as having short dark hair with shaved sides, wearing dark trousers and a dark shirt with gold patterns under the sleeves and dark running shoes. The RCMP is also looking for the driver of the car and a woman who was in the vehicle at the time of the incident. The head of the Lac La Ronge Indian band, Tammy Cook-Searson, said the community was shocked by the incident. “Those I spoke to were very scared and did not know what was going on,” Cook-Searson said. “We were just trying to make sure people were getting the information we were getting from the RCMP.” Cook-Searson said shops and the local health center were closed and people were ordered to stay in their homes as police investigated the community. “It was a scary situation,” he said. “We just had to lock ourselves in and try to keep everyone safe.” The RCMP said the shooting suspect was last seen on foot in the Far Reserve Road area, but that there was a possible sight of him heading north on Highway 2, the RCMP said. Drivers were advised not to hitchhike and to contact the police immediately if they saw the suspect. He is considered dangerous and should not be approached. As life begins to return to normal in the community, schools in La Ronge and Air Ronge will be on standby and safe on Monday, meaning the children will stay in all day.
