According to San Antonio police, residents in high-rise buildings near downtown felt shaking from what was believed to be a 5.4-magnitude earthquake (upgraded from a previous USGS report of 5.3-magnitude) that noted in West Texas. The USGS website indicates that this earthquake occurred about 23 miles WSW of Mentone, Texas at 3:32 p.m. CST, located about 350 miles northwest of San Antonio. A few aftershocks have also been recorded in the same area after the initial earthquake, one measuring 2.8 on the Richter scale and another measuring 2.6 on the Richter scale. Reports indicate that Wednesday’s earthquake is the third largest on record in Texas, after a magnitude 6.5 earthquake in 1931 and a magnitude 5.7 earthquake in 1995. Due to the geology of our area, earthquakes of this magnitude are felt at such a distance. Copyright 2022 by KSAT – All rights reserved.
