The Poseidon torpedo, which President Putin unveiled in 2018 as an “innovative new weapon,” was to be test-fired by Russia’s 30,000-ton Belgorod submarine in the Arctic. However, the Belgorod, which at 583 feet is the world’s largest submarine, returned to port in Severomorsk, the base of Russia’s Northern Fleet, without any proof of the Poseidon test having taken place. The technical failure, first reported by CNN citing US intelligence officials, is a major blow to Moscow as the Poseidon was touted as an “unstoppable” weapons system with unlimited range.
