The poll conducted for CTV News found that seven in 10 Canadians (52 per cent) said they would support the return of face mask mandates, while three in 10 (22 per cent) would oppose. Additionally, 17 percent said they would somewhat support the mandate while 8 percent would somewhat oppose it.
Taking a national look, Canadians in all provinces agreed about the idea of the mandate evenly, with respondents from most provinces reaching over 60% agreement. British Columbia reported the highest support at 72 per cent, followed by 71.4 per cent in Ontario, 71.3 per cent in Atlantic, 65.3 per cent in Quebec and 62.9 per cent in the Prairies.
Of those opposed, respondents in the Prairies made up the highest proportion at 36.4 per cent, followed by 32.3 per cent in Quebec, 28.7 per cent in Atlantic, 27.3 per cent in B.C. and 26.9 per cent in Ontario.
Women were more likely to agree with the return of tenure with 72.6 percent saying they would show support, compared to 64.4 percent of men who agreed.
The survey also found that 34 percent of men would oppose the mandate compared to 26.1 percent of women.
Both women and men over 55 strongly agreed – more than any other age group – with the hypothetical return of face mask use, with 82.8 percent saying they would support it. The age group most likely to oppose the mandate was 18 to 34-year-olds with survey results showing 44.3 percent opposed.
Most provinces dropped coverage requirements earlier this year, and within the past two months, the federal government has ended COVID-19 border restrictions, including the use of face masks on planes and trains. But amid a resurgence of respiratory illness cases in hospitals, there has been growing debate over whether a face mask mandate should be brought back.
Hospitals are already overwhelmed with cases of respiratory illness, especially among children, prompting some health experts, including Ontario’s top doctor, to restore recommendations for the public to cover up ahead of a tough winter season.
