John Thomas, a Republican strategist who is organizing a fundraising committee for Mr. DeSandis, reported an increase in donors and volunteers since last Tuesday’s election. Eric Anton, a major Republican donor added, “He’s just built this incredible energy and winning streak.” Mr DeSantis received a further boost from a new YouGov poll which showed 41 per cent of Republican voters wanted him to be the party’s presidential nominee – two per cent more than Mr Trump. Other Republicans are expected to throw their hat in the ring, including Glenn Youngkin, the governor of Virginia. Like Mr. DeSantis, he has already been the victim of verbal abuse from Mr. Trump. But some Republicans — including Jeff Lord, a former Reagan White House aide — cautioned against writing Trump off. “I think Trump is weak with the establishment, but the base is quite strong,” he told the Telegraph. “I went to one of his rallies here in Pennsylvania. There were tens of thousands of people and they’re not going anywhere.”
