A stream inflated by rain rushes to Lake Okanagan near Gellatly Bay in West Kelowna Friday, June 17, 2022. Thunderstorms are expected again on Sunday and Monday in Central Okanagan, and this is likely to add to the total rainfall for the month. From June 1 to June 14, Environment Canada recorded 48.7 millimeters of rain at Kelowna International Airport. As of June 14, they have dropped about 10 mm. “The climatologist came to us recently and gave us a report that it was wetter than normal, as you may have noticed, for June,” said Ken Dosanjh, an environmental meteorologist in Canada. “For the climate on which we base the average rainfall of 30 years, we start in 1981-2010 for Kelowna. “On average, we expect about 45.9 mm of rainfall for the month of June”, he adds. But we are still far from the rainfall record in June 2012, when the Kelowna region hit 106.6 mm. The short-term forecast predicts a risk of thunderstorms on Sunday and Monday, while unstable conditions could also extend into the middle of the week. A high-pressure ridge from the southwest is being created in the area. “It usually means better weather at this point. “However, because it relies on more pipeline, the possibility of rain with a risk of thunderstorms is possible for the next two days,” Dosanjh explains. “Well, with these rain bands, it’s more successful. “If it passes over Kelowna, you could expect 5-10 mm of rain with one event.” The ridge could break in the middle of the week, bringing more rain. Dosanjh notes that it is too early to say whether a low currently in the Gulf of Alaska expected to move to the Cariboo and Central Interior will fall to Okanagan.
