The mayor of Port aux Basques says residents are facing a lot of stress as winter approaches. Mayor Brian Button says after the devastation caused by Hurricane Fiona, people get nervous when they hear about the possibility of a weather system approaching. He says residents aren’t just worried about potential damage, they’re also concerned that the majority of the city’s infrastructure was damaged during the storm and has yet to rebuild. Areas of Port aux Basques experienced further flooding over the weekend after 84mm of rain fell. He says they are well aware that time is not on their side as the city is still working to complete essential repairs. They are working as fast as they can, but say rebuilding is a long process. “Fiona left us quite a mess,” he says. “It’s left us with a lot of stress and anxiety for everyone involved … but we’re trying to make some progress and get things done.”
