Torrential rain on the south-west coast at the weekend hit hard in an area already dealing with devastation from Cyclone Fiona. Port aux Basques recorded more than 84 millimeters of rain and caused flooding in some areas of the city. Mayor Brian Button says it’s been a busy day for city staff who have called in extra crews to respond to reports of flooding from the rain and a lack of infrastructure due to damage from Fiona. He says some of the homes that were safe during Fiona were not so lucky on Saturday. Mayor Button says unfortunately homes that weren’t previously damaged suffered flooding and other issues related to the storm. After Hurricane Fiona, many residents are facing a lot of anxiety about the weather ahead. He says residents know the severity of the damage to the city’s infrastructure. Under normal conditions, this amount of rain can cause minor problems. Because of Fiona, heavy rainfall can easily cause additional problems.
