A handful of businesses in Sault Ste. Marie will have to dig much deeper into their pockets if they want to maintain their status as a certified salaried employer. According to a report released Monday by the Ontario Living Wage Network (OLWN), the living wage for the Sault has risen to $19.70 an hour in 2022 — a 21.6 per cent increase over last year’s living wage of $16.20 per hour, representing the largest jump province-wide....

Most train services in the UK will be canceled on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays due to disputes over fares and terms. Only one skeleton service will operate on the main lines and around urban areas. London Underground workers will also be on strike for 24 hours on Tuesday, disrupting the capital’s transport system. RMT Secretary-General Mick Lynch said the rail dispute could not be resolved without the government lifting the shackles on Network Rail and train companies....

The resolution passed on Monday was supported by 94 of the 193 members of the assembly. It said Russia, which invaded its neighbor in February, “must bear the legal consequences of all its internationally illegal acts, including reparation for the injury, including any damage, caused by such acts.” Fourteen countries voted against the resolution, including Russia, China and Iran, while 73 abstained, including Brazil, India and South Africa. Not all member states voted....

A Tim Hortons-brand chicken noodle soup base has been recalled in Alberta and southwestern Ontario for containing insects. In an emailed statement, Tim Hortons said Thursday that the recall does not affect canned soups sold in grocery stores, only the soup base made and sold at a few isolated restaurants. He said no illnesses were reported. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) said the recalled product was available for purchase in those provinces until October 20....

British documentary filmmaker Alex Holden documents Trump and his family in the months leading up to the Capitol uprising. Mr Holden revealed on Tuesday that his video had been requested by a House committee on January 6th. According to Politico, which reported the story for the first time, the summons is for his raw footage taken on Jan. 6, raw footage from interviews he had with former Vice President Mike Pence from September 2020 until today....

Steve Barclay said he was saddened by the proposed industrial action by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), which he said was not in anyone’s best interests. He is resisting pay negotiations after the union demanded a rise of at least 15% compared to the £1,400 rise given earlier this year. Barclay said the pay award “is a balanced increase” which is “fair to nurses and taxpayers”. He wrote in the Sunday Telegraph: “Yet the RCN is demanding a whopping 17....

People across Ukraine awoke from a night of celebrations after the Kremlin announced that its troops had withdrawn across the Dnipro River from Kherson. The Ukrainian military said it was overseeing “stabilization measures” in areas around the city to make sure it was safe. The Russian retreat represented a major setback for the Kremlin some six weeks after Putin annexed the Kherson region and three other provinces in southern and eastern Ukraine in violation of international law and declared them Russian territory....
