The Équité Association, an organization dedicated to reducing crime and insurance fraud, has released its list of the top 10 stolen vehicles in Ontario and across Canada.

“The Toronto and Montreal metropolitan areas are rich hunting ground for organized auto theft crimes that funnel stolen vehicles overseas to sell for profit,” a news release states.

“With Canada becoming a source country for the lucrative stolen vehicle export trade, the Honda CR-V tops this year’s list.”

In October, the Toronto Police Service (TPS) held a press conference highlighting the dramatic increase in carjackings in the city, with 182 incidents so far.

Insp. Rich Harris of the TPS Hold Up Squad noted that car thefts target high-end and mid-range vehicles for criminal activity or resale purposes.

Although the Honda CR-V was Canada’s most stolen vehicle with 4,117 thefts across the country, the Lexus RX series was more likely to be stolen in Ontario.

Across the province, 2,083 Lexus RX Series SUVs were stolen last year, a number that’s about double the number of stolen Honda CR-Vs with 1,150 reported thefts.

Ford F-150 trucks were also among the top three stolen vehicles in Ontario last year.

Compared to the 2020 list, Honda Civics rounded out the top three spots with the Lexus RX series and Honda CR-V remaining in the top two spots.
