The man, who was in poor health beyond his legs, died several days later, WEAU reports, and an autopsy was performed after the Pierce County Medical Examiner noticed the man’s leg was detached and lying next to him at the funeral home. . According to the criminal complaint, some of the witnesses said the man did not appear to be in any trouble when the leg was removed, but others said he “turned around” and grabbed one of the nurse’s arms very tightly. That prompted Brown to proceed with the amputation because she “believed it was the right thing to do,” according to the affidavit.

Both nurse’s aides told a sheriff’s investigator that Brown then began talking about taking the paw to her family’s taxidermy shop, the Post reports. One of the nurses said Brown wanted to take the leg home and preserve it with epoxy. “She thought it was strange that Brown wanted to bronze the leg,” the investigator wrote in the report. The affidavit states that Brown told the investigator she was responsible for the amputation, even though neither the patient nor her bosses asked her to remove the leg.
