Video has been released of New Scotland RCMP officers fatally shooting the perpetrator of one of the worst mass murders in Canadian history. Today’s decision by the commissioners of a public inquiry into the mass attack in Nova Scotia in 2020 overturns their previous decision to protect the videos from publication. The five videos from various security cameras at an Irving Big Stop gas station in Enfield, NS, were recorded when RCMP officers killed the gunman, ending a 13-hour commotion that claimed 22 lives. The ruling states that some videos show the perpetrator being shot dead and then taken out of the stolen car he was driving, while others show the car windows shattered as they were hit by bullets fired by two RCMP officers at the scene. He says the videos will be posted on the Mass Casualty Commission website with a warning about what they depict. Commissioners say they initially decided to publish only snapshots of the video because of the possibility of re-injuring those affected by the mass shootings, but many media outlets disputed the decision. “We urge the public to keep in mind that whenever photos and videos related to the mass victim are discussed or reported on a public forum, the people portrayed and their families are affected and for some it is traumatic.” says the decision.
