Police were seen retrieving a knife from a front garden, but Northumbria police have not yet confirmed the nature of what happened.  Witnesses and neighbors reported hearing voices, seeing a chase, and talking about how the shocking screams had disrupted a summer afternoon.  Police forensics and detectives were still in the area conducting door-to-door searches in the Sussex Gardens and St Hilda Avenue area overnight. 
Shortly after 2 p.m. On one of the hottest days of 2022 so far, others said they had seen shocking scenes from their doorsteps.

A neighbor who was at his window a few feet away from the scene told ChronicleLive: “I did not see how it ended, but from the window, as soon as I opened it, I saw these two lads running.  caught a glance, that was it.  There was a man behind him who was hunting.  I could not see anything, but he was obviously shouting. ” 

The same man also explained that “there were no words” for what he had seen and that he had heard screams and voices – and said that he estimated that the police were “just behind” the incident, arriving “within about 60 seconds”. A woman who works and lives “on the street” from the incident, summed up the shock and fear that had taken over the neighborhood, which is located between the Holy Cross Cemetery and Archer Street. He said: “You just do not expect this to happen. You do not expect it at all, but especially not in the middle of the day. Not when your children are out of school.” She said she had been petrified for the safety of her children, adding: “We heard all the voices, we heard voices. And then the neighbors told me they would pass right in front of our street.” And an old woman shared the horror with what had happened. He said: “I only found out when the kids ran to my bus to tell us. This was a wonderful estate. But now in the Holy Cross you just do not know. They were wonderful old people – now you can not sleep at night.” He said he had lived in area 52 years. A few doors above the police cordon, a mom told ChronicleLive how she had not lived long in the area. “It’s more or less close to home, literally,” he said. “It really is.” A Northeast Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We were called to an incident at a private address in Walsent at 2.20pm this afternoon. . “ ChronicleLive contacted Northumbria police for more information.
