Donald Trump is running for president once again in 2024, but you might not know that if you read the latest edition of the New York Post. At a time when media companies could choose to use the former president’s foray back into electoral politics as a money fountain, the New York Post barely mentioned Mr. Trump’s return. On Wednesday morning, the paper included a thin blue banner at the bottom of its front page that teased “Florida Man Makes Announcement” — all the way to page 26. Even if readers look to the post and scan page 26, they are likely to miss the small text box containing the story of Mr. Trump’s announcement. “With just 720 days until the next election, a Florida retiree made the surprise announcement that he was running for president,” the story begins. The rest of the passage – titled “Been there, Don that” – downplays and dismisses the former president’s ambitions. Mr. Trump is referred to as an “avid golfer” and his Mar-a-Lago estate as his “library of classified documents,” and the authors note that, if elected, he would tie Biden as the oldest president. in US history. The scandalous, dismissive story comes days after Fox News/News Corp, Wall Street Journal and New York Post owner Rupert Murdoch reportedly urged Trump not to run again in 2024. According to iNews UK, Mr Murdoch made it clear to Mr Trump that the former reality TV presenter would not have the sprawling News Corp media empire to back his election bid this time around. “We were clear with Donald. “There were conversations between them in which Rupert made it clear to Donald that we cannot support another run for the White House,” a senior News Corp official was quoted as telling the newspaper. While it’s unclear whether the New York Post story is a glimpse of Trump coverage to come or just a special shot intended to deflate his announcement, it clearly amused the former president’s detractors on Twitter. “And so, in four short paragraphs on page 26, the New York Post breaks the news of a perennial contender’s third attempt, cholesterol levels ‘unknown,’” wrote historian and author Michael Beschloss. Another account using the handle “NumbersMuncher” claimed the newspaper “spare Trump’s presidential announcement in the most savage way imaginable.” Others were skeptical that Mr Murdoch’s fortunes had really left the former president. One user who followed “jessespector” said “it would be hilarious when the New York Post itself serves as the Florida man’s campaign newsletter in the summer and fall of 2024.” So far, the New York Post’s online offerings have taken the same tack as its print product, with stories calling the former president’s announcement “low energy” and “bruising,” and that it was “ignored, downplayed” on cable networks. .
