Melania Trump has found herself at the center of a debate surrounding wedding etiquette after wearing a cream dress to her stepdaughter Tiffany Trump’s wedding. Tiffany, 29, exchanged vows with Michael Boulos over the weekend during a reception held at Mar-a-Lago, the Palm Beach, Florida estate owned by her father, former President Donald Trump. For the occasion, Tiffany chose a long-sleeved Elie Saab wedding dress, which featured beading and a ballgown-style skirt, while her bridal party, which included sister Ivanka Trump as maid of honor, wore light blue gowns. Ivanka’s dress was notable in its own right as it was a replica of the light blue gown worn by Grace Kelly for the 1955 film To Catch a Thief. While it’s unclear whether the 29-year-old bride asked guests to follow a specific dress code for the nuptials, several guests also opted for dresses in pale shades, including Tiffany’s mother, Marla Maples, who wore a lavender dress. the bride’s sister-in-law Lara Trump, who wore a silver embellished gown. However, the dress worn by Tiffany’s stepmother Melania proved controversial, despite matching the neutral color scheme, as the 52-year-old opted for a cream dress and tan belt for the Palm Beach nuptials, a color choice that many claimed that it was too close to the bride’s white. “And who wears a white or cream dress to a wedding? Melania, of course,” one person tweeted, noting that “it’s the bride’s day to be the focus.” Another person said: “Ok, Melania’s dress may not be exactly white, but it’s still close enough to be inappropriate for her stepdaughter’s wedding. Marla must be furious, I would be.’ “Did Melania wear a white dress to her stepdaughter’s wedding? Ugh,” someone else tweeted. Others debated the dress’s appropriateness, while recognizing Kimberly Guilfoyle’s black dress, which Ivanka cut from a wedding photo she shared on Instagram. Ivanka later posted the raw version of the photo, which showed Guilfoyle standing next to her, Melania, Tiffany, Maples and Lara, to her Instagram Stories. “Okay, we’ve all talked about ‘culture’, but has anyone said anything about Melania going full Evil Stepmother and wearing a dress that can only be described as ‘not white because I’m wearing a belt,’” one person asked. According to another, the wedding was filled with a series of controversial clothing choices. “Because it is [Melania] is she wearing a white dress?? I swear we need a whole Fashion Police show for this event. From Kimberly’s bat, Ivanka’s belly dance costume, and now Melania wearing white, it’s like, don’t these women have stylists??? they wrote on Twitter. Although the majority of social media users suggested that Melania’s dress was white, one person noted that the dress actually appeared to be cream or pale pink. “I don’t think it’s white. It appears to be blush pink, peach or light pastel. You can say against Trump’s shirt,” they wrote next to a photo of Melania and her husband. However, in response, another person pointed out that, as a general rule, guests are advised not to wear colors similar to white to a wedding. “If it looks off-white, it’s best not to wear it to a wedding as a general rule,” they wrote. According to wedding website The Knot, it’s generally “not appropriate for guests to wear white to a wedding,” as bridal designer Madeline Gardner explained, “when you’re a guest at a wedding, the most important thing to keep. the mind is not to upset or disturb the bride.’ “It’s safe to stay away from any clothes that are predominantly white, cream or ivory,” she added. That said, there are some situations where a white outfit is acceptable, such as when the invitation clearly calls for it or if the outfit “incorporates a colorful pattern or white as just a minor accent color,” Shawne Jacobs, president and creative director of Anne Barge, said at The Knot. As for whether guests should also avoid black, The Knot reports that the shade is generally acceptable. However, it is important to consider factors such as location and formality when choosing a dress for a wedding. “It’s important for guests to consider the type of wedding they’re having before making any decisions about color and fabric. This will ensure that the guest is dressed appropriately for the formality of the wedding,” Jacobs said.
