The projectiles narrowly missed the King as the royals greeted people in the city’s Micklegate Bar. People in the crowd booed and chanted “God save the King” and “shame on you”. As the eggs landed, a proper security officer positioned himself next to the King and briefly held his shoulder. The royals are in York for a series of engagements, including the unveiling of a statue of the Queen – the first to be erected since her death. The visit is part of a traditional ceremony in which the monarch is formally welcomed to York by the Lord Mayor. It was last performed by the Queen in 2012.
