It comes as officers from several police forces patrol Britain’s busiest motorway. In recent hours Just Stop Oil has claimed responsibility for the disruption, which is the fourth consecutive day of “action”. The campaign group has warned of continued protests until the government takes action to tackle climate change and tackle what they say is oil dependence. Forces including Surrey, Kent, Essex, Hertfordshire and the Metropolitan Police are out on key sections of the road to minimize disruption. ITV Meridian was told by officers that Kent Police arrested five people in a car in Westerham who were traveling towards Surrey to cause a disturbance. EXCLUSIVE: ITV Meridian is on patrol with Surrey Police, who have closed the M25 near Junction 8. The road has been closed in both directions between junction 16 for the M40 and junction 15 for the M4 while police deal with a protester. It has since reopened, but traffic is backed up for miles, with drivers being asked to seek alternative routes. Roads to and from Heathrow Airport are now reportedly busy, with traffic queuing. The M25 was also closed in both directions at Junction 8 – due to a protester on a bridge without a leash. Surrey Police have now dealt with the situation on a crane bridge, and have also removed another protester who was reported further up the same stretch of road. EXCLUSIVE: ITV Meridian captured the moment officers removed a protester from one of the bridges near junction 8 of the M25. Elsewhere on the road, all lanes have reopened on the left-hand carriageway between J29 A127 (Romford / Basildon) and J28 A12 (Brentwood / Brook Street Roundabout) after a protester tried to climb a bridge. Congestion has been reported from both sides. The motorway was also opened in both directions between junction 25 and junction 24 due to the protesters. It was also closed anti-clockwise between Junction 23 for the M1 and Junction 24 for a short time. EXCLUSIVE: Police arrest a protester who was pushed off a bridge near Junction 8. Police were out in force this morning and, with some forces using drones to try to identify protesters before they reached motorway bridges. Surrey Police has stationed officers at key points on the motorway in the hope of minimizing disruption. ITV Meridian has had exclusive access to the business and is on site with officers throughout the morning.
EXCLUSIVE: ITV Meridian is on patrol with officers as they try to prevent protesters from entering the bridges. Meanwhile, Kent Police said that as of 7:50 A.M. no incidents on road networks in Kent. Its officers are currently assisting other forces to respond to disturbance elsewhere on the M25. On Wednesday, Lisa Townsend, the Police and Crime Commissioner for Surrey, urged activists to stop their “reckless” protests. He said: “What we have seen in Surrey and elsewhere over the last three days goes far beyond peaceful protests. What we are dealing with here is organized crime by determined activists. “Unfortunately, we have now seen a police officer in Essex injured while responding to one of the protests and I would like to send them my best wishes for a full and speedy recovery. “The actions of this group are becoming more and more reckless and I call on them to stop these dangerous demonstrations now. Enough is enough – people are getting hurt.” However, Just Stop Oil tweeted this morning that they are “done asking nicely” and action will continue. The group commented yesterday on an incident where a police officer was injured during a protest. Just Stop Oil commented on the incident: “The collision of two lorries and the injury of a police officer on the M25 this morning is an awful situation. The level of disruption seen on the M25 should not be happening – people are rightly angry and frustrated. “The impact on people’s lives is huge. Under normal circumstances this would be unacceptable. It should never have come to this. The failure of our policy has left us no choice as we try to protect our rights and freedoms from a collapse law and order because of a warming world.”
