Jurgen Klopp will miss Liverpool’s game against Southampton this weekend after the Football Association appealed against a decision to fine only the manager for his angry rant at a match referee. The German was initially fined £30,000 by an independent regulatory body for his behavior towards referees during the match against Manchester City on 16 October. However, the FA felt the punishment for Klopp was too lenient and an independent appeals board ruled the Liverpool boss out of the squad with immediate effect.
Jurgen Klopp was handed a one-match ban after the FA won their appeal against what they deemed a lenient punishment following his angry rant at an official. Ban means Klopp will miss Liverpool’s clash with Southampton at the weekend That means he will miss Liverpool’s final game before the World Cup when they host Southampton at Anfield on Saturday. Klopp was sent off in the 86th minute of his side’s 1-0 win on October 16 for confronting assistant referee Gary Beswick in a furious reaction to an unchallenged foul on Mohamed Salah by Bernardo Silva. The German admitted he “lost it” but insisted he had not sworn at Beswick. Asked the day after the fine was handed down if he felt it was a fair punishment, Klopp replied: “Should I be banned? I do not know. Klopp was initially fined £30,000 following his red card in the 1-0 win over Manchester City. Klopp walks off following his red card after complaining he was not given a foul for a challenge on Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah by Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva. “I’ve never been in that situation, I’ve never had a red card, I’ve never had a yellow card as far as I know. “I’m the wrong person to ask. I have no idea what the usual stuff is. I was banned years ago in the Champions League with (Borussia) Dortmund, similar situation, but obviously the Champions League is slightly different. “I know what I said, and I know what I was saying, but from further away and with a different face, it would have been perfectly fine. I said “how can you not, how can you not?” “I think the most expensive person, I’m not sure in the world, but at least here. I think it’s a lot of money, but I heard it’s going to be invested in something good, and that’s fine.’ Klopp and Liverpool won the match 1-0, but almost a month after the October 16 clash, the German was suspended on appeal for his angry rant at an official. On Friday after the game between the two Premier League giants, the FA confirmed its decision to appeal. In a statement they wrote: “The FA can confirm that it is appealing against the sanction of the Independent Regulatory Commission in relation to the recent case involving Jurgen Klopp, after considering its written reasons. “The independent Regulatory Commission has fined Jurgen Klopp £30,000 for breaching FA Regulation E3 during Liverpool FC’s Premier League match on Sunday 16 October 2022 against Manchester City FC”. The FA launched the ‘Enough Is Enough’ campaign in September, which aims to stamp out abuse at all levels of the game. It is understood that the FA believes that elite-level managers set an example for the grassroots game in terms of acceptable behaviour.
