With the US Open crowning a national championship at The Country Club in Brooklyn, Massachusetts, for the first time since 1988, the action intensified en masse over the weekend with a thunderous end on Sunday. The first 54 holes saw a number of stars rise to the leaderboard with Scottie Scheffler and Matthew Fitzpatrick dueling in the middle of the final round as Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy and others try to make one last effort. Fitzpatrick and Will Zalatoris took the lead with a one-hit lead after three rounds and Zalatoris wants to achieve on Sunday what he could not do in the PGA Championship: to close his first career. Fitzpatrick, who won an amateur crown at The Country Club, hopes the acquaintance will give him enough impetus to get his first big one. Rahm – the defending champion – meanwhile, was a shot away from the lead and aimed to go back. Scheffler is trying to gain rarified status as one of the few men to win the Masters and US Open that same year. As for McIlroy, he has been playing his best golf for years and is trying to win his first big one since 2014. Even beyond these golfers, there is so much to follow on Sunday that can be overwhelming at times. Do not worry: we have covered you.
