WHITTIER, Calif. – A group of law enforcement recruits are in critical condition after being hit by a car during their morning jog in Whittier, authorities said. The California Highway Patrol said the incident was reported at 6:30 a.m. near the intersection of Mills Avenue and Telegraph Road. Recruits attend the Sheriff’s Training Academy and Regional Services Center (STARS) located in the 11500 block of Colima Street, which is about a mile and a half from the crash site. Whittier is located 20 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles. Authorities confirmed the driver was given a field sobriety test and taken into custody. Field sobriety test results are unknown. SkyFOX was on the scene and showed debris from the wreckage, as well as other patients being triaged by medical personnel. The 11 victims were rushed to area trauma centers, some were airlifted, and up to 15 recruits may have been hit. The circumstances that led the driver to hit the victims are being investigated. A neighbor told FOX 11 that recruits often jog in the area and run in packs wearing high-visibility vests. Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said he was going to area hospitals to check in with victims and said some may have suffered life-threatening injuries.
