A large barn burned to the ground overnight north of Lumby. Fire crews were called to set fire to the 1100-block of Mabel Lake Road at around 1:30 a.m. Sunday to find the barn completely engulfed in flames. “A full barn fire, with some machinery and equipment inside the shed, but it was completely engulfed when we arrived,” said Lumby Fire Chief Tony Clayton. “It will be valued as a total loss.” Due to the magnitude of the fire and its distance from the city, crews from both the Livington Fire Department and the Swan Lake BX Fire Rescue were called in to assist. “It was important and it is very far from the city, so we had to go by bus. “We had four water supplies and then crews on the ground out there,” Clayton said. It rained on the scene overnight, but Clayton said the fire was burning too hot to have a big effect, although damp ground helped stop the blaze from spreading. Crews remained on stage until just before 8 a.m. and Clayton says another small crew will return Sunday morning to check for hot spots. A firefighter was checked by paramedics at the scene after “exaggerating a bit”, but Clayton says he was fine. The cause of the fire remains unclear.
