Rich McCormick, an emergency physician and retired Marine, will win the Republican nomination for the 6th District of Georgia Congress, CNN’s works. McCormick, who won a landslide victory in the May 24 primaries, faced lawyer Jake Evans in Tuesday’s second round of the Atlanta Subway area. While Evans had the advantage of backing former President Donald Trump, he did not improve much on the 24% turnout in the primary. McCormick, meanwhile, has the backing of others within the Republican Party, including House Minority whip Steve Scalize, as well as PAC support for the Development Club. It was also the top fundraiser in the field, raising more than $ 3 million and almost double what Evans brought. Although he did not have the support of the former President, McCormick ran as a MAGA conservative. This is McCormick’s second bid for Congress. In 2020, he lost a close race to Republican MP Carolyn Bordeaux in the neighboring 7th Congressional District. After the census redistribution placed part of the old 7th District in the new 6th District, McCormick began his quest for a more Republican-friendly seat. (Incumbent House Speaker Lucy McBath defeated Bordeaux last month in a by-election to represent the new Seventh.) The new constituency is strongly Republican and McCormick is a clear favorite to win the seat in November.
