Kate Middleton may have been one of the most influential royals at the time, but the now-Princess of Wales was snubbed when she attended now-King Charles’ birthday party. Former royal butler Grand Harold recalled the time when Prince William and Kate were studying at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. By 2004 the couple’s romance was widely known and Kate attended a royal event before their marriage was announced. However, no one seemed to notice that she was the future king’s girlfriend. Charles’ 60th birthday in 2008 left Kate “standing alone in the middle of a marquee”. “And no one was talking to her or going to her because they didn’t know who she was or recognize her,” he repeated. “William wasn’t there at the time and he was just standing there. She wasn’t really known. So I went over and started talking to her while we were waiting for Will to come in and it was really sweet.” Harold admitted thinking to himself, “Can you imagine putting her in the middle of a room now, she would have been beaten.”
