John Albert Laylo, 35, and his mother were inside an Uber on their way to Philadelphia International Airport early Saturday morning. As Uber was traveling along block 200 on South 38th Street at 4:10 a.m., a black vehicle, possibly a Nissan Maxima, stopped behind them. The vehicle then rose from the driver’s side and a gunman inside fired multiple shots, hitting the Uber. The vehicle then fled the scene. Leilo was shot once in the back of the head. Penn police officers who responded transported Lailo to the Presbyterian Penn Medical Center. He was later pronounced dead at 10:33 a.m. Sunday. No arrests have been made and police have not released any information about any suspects. They have also not yet revealed whether Laylo was a target or an innocent passerby. They continue the search and look for watching videos. Laylo’s mother, Leah Bustamante Laylo, told NBC10 that her son was a government lawyer in the Philippines and the two were vacationing in Philadelphia at the time of his death. He also said he was hit by shrapnel during the shooting, but was doing well. “I can not explain the pain the weight I have in my heart,” he wrote. “It took me hours to post it because I still can’t believe it happened!” A gun-and-fire detector from the city inspector’s office gathered 836 non-fatalities and 208 fatalities by Thursday, June 16th. The shootings are responsible for most of the killings in Philadelphia this year. As of Saturday night, there had been 230 homicides in the city in 2022, down just 10 percent from the same time last year that was ultimately the deadliest year in Philadelphia on record. In response to the growing gun violence, officials announced a joint initiative between Pennsylvania State Police and Philadelphia Police in which both departments will increase their presence in areas of the city most affected by crime.
